SCRs are part of a class of semiconductors called Thyristors - a group which consists of devices like SCRs, TRIAC, DIACs, etc. They're typically used in power control applications, but can be used for other purposes too. This video presents the basic operation of an SCR, and a simple little circuit that exploits its properties.
