In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew flies the X PlusOne from xCraft. This distinctive platform combines elements of a multirotor drone and a fixed-wing aircraft, allowing it to take off and land vertically, as well as pitching over and taking advantage of aerodynamic lift. The aircraft requires a GPS fix before flight and includes three flight modes: Hover, Smart and Acro. Hover provides GPS stabilization, while Smart enables a “headless” flight mode similar to DJI's Intelligent Orientation Control (IOC). Acro allows for more aggressive pilot inputs, allowing the X PlusOne to pitch forward and fly like an airplane. In GPS-enabled flight modes, the aircraft is surprisingly stable, even in moderate wind. However, maintaining aircraft orientation is a challenge that requires a skilled pilot, owing to its tendency to make unexpected yaw maneuvers. Also, without elevators or ailerons, even in forward flight the X PlusOne remains a conventional multirotor, albeit one flying in an unconventional manner. The episode concludes with a flight endurance test.
