This is the first flight on floats for Paul’s Hangar 9 30cc DHC-2 Beaver.
The West Coast RC Aircraft Flyers club hosted an awesome float fly event at Alouette Lake that was well attended. Because there were so many planes in the air most of the time, people were flying a left hand circuit to avoid collisions. This meant that the variety of camera angles became somewhat limited. You may notice that Paul’s plane was getting knocked around a bit by the gusting winds.
Because we tend to see more full scale Beavers on floats rather than on wheels in this area, it just seems more natural to see her fly off the water.
I can’t say enough about the quality of the still photos taken by our friend Dale Toews. A big shout out to Dale for letting me use the photos in the video. Thanks Dale, awesome job my friend!
Paul’s Beaver (that doesn’t sound right does it?) is an awesome model and it never fails to attract a crowd. You don’t have to squint very hard to pretend that the model could be the real deal.
I hope you enjoy Paul’s flight.
The engine is an EME 35 with the electric start option powered by a 7.4 volt lipo. The lipo also powers the light kit and ignition system through an electronic kill switch. The prop is/was a Falcon 20x8 2 blade. Paul also has a Morepower Adjustable Pitch 3 blade prop for when he really feels the need to go scale.

The receiver is a Futaba 7008 sbus 2 with an expansion hub. Servos are all Futaba digitalis with the exception of the throttle/choke servos which are jr MC35.
For power, there is a pair of Li-Fe 2s2p 1700mah batteries running 6.6v thru a dual redundant switch. Paul thinks he could probably fly all weekend on that set-up LOL.
The pilot is a Civilian Pilot from Warbirdpilots.com . Paul named him "Beaver Bob" after a local Coastal Air pilot who actually goes by that call sign.
The floats were designed for a Cub but work well with the Beaver after a few thoughtful modifications. Paul said that he shortened the second strut by about 1/2" or 12mm and it was all good. Help can be found in this small but helpful thread on RC Groups:

Lights are high power 3.3v Cree LED's on heat sinks individually wired to a Hobby King lighting controller. Paul plans to upgrade the controller to a programmable unit so that he can create his own light patterns for flight/landing/takeoff, etc.
There are two LED's on each wingtip - 1 strobe and 1 color, 2 landing lights on the wings, one strobe on the rear and one red beacon on the top.
Thanks for watching!
