Anki Overdrive Review - Smartphone Controlled Autonomous Slot Car Racing Game
Buy it on Amazon - (affiliate link) - The Anki Overdrive is a smartphone powered slot car racing game.
What's remarkable about the system is how the cars are able to stay on the track autonomously. There's no guide wire or slots on the track - the cars use an optical sensor to know their position. They will occasionally go off the track but the car will sometimes find its way back.
The Overdrive track is modular and additional track pieces can be purchased. This will quickly escalate the price beyond its $150 price tag for the starter kit. Additional track pieces cost roughly $10 each with specialty components costing more. I found that although the included track is relatively large, the cars move so fast it's hard to get a feel of control. Additional faster cars can be purchased for $50 each.
Players can adjust the cars speed and lane position and can compete against other people on site with a smartphone or against AI powered computer opponents. The game is compatible with both iPhone and Android devices.
This is a remarkable toy given how the cars can smartly stay on the track most of the time with no guide wires. But you'll need to budget a little more beyond the cost of the starter kit for full enjoyment.
