Buffalo MiniStation Extreme NFC Review - External USB 3.0 Hard drive - unlocks with NFC
Buy it on Amazon - (affiliate link)
This is a nice and very solidly constructed external hard drive from Buffalo. It can survive modest falls (off a desk, etc) and is water and dust resistant. The drive connects to a PC or Mac via USB 3.0. and is powered over the USB bus. This drive employs a traditional spinning hard drive and not an SSD, so speeds come in around 100 megabytes per second on both reads and writes.
The most interesting feature of the drive is its on board encryption. The drive can be unlocked via a password, and/or by an included passcard that has an integrated near field communication (NFC) chip. Placing the card on top of the drive will unlock it and automatically mount it on a Mac or Windows desktop. I do highly recommend to secure the drive with both a password and the NFC card, because it will be impossible to unlock the drive if the card is lost.
And that's my only real gripe with this device -- it doesn't work with any NFC devices beyond the included card. It doesn't support the many Android phones that have NFC chips built in. Expanding NFC support to other devices would make this feature much more useful.
